Medina County residents have a genuine access problem when it comes to counseling. Ohio is a designated Health Professional Shortage Area for mental health, and out of the state’s 88 counties, 75 are classified as mental health shortage areas. Medina County is among them. The 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment conducted for Medina Hospital named Behavioral Health one of its top prioritized health needs, and the companion assessment for Lodi Hospital found that residents described limited availability of behavioral health providers, long wait times, and affordability challenges, with those barriers falling hardest on youth and older adults.

There is a second layer to it. Medina County is a commuter county. The average commute here runs about 27 minutes, with a good share of residents driving north to Cleveland or south to Akron for work. That means the people who most need counseling are often the ones with the least room in their week to get it, and the ones least willing to add another 40 minute drive to find a counselor who shares their faith. We opened our Medina office so that families here do not have to choose between getting help and getting home in time for dinner.

What is Christian based counseling

Christian counseling is the process in which a professional counselor uses the tools of the mental health profession, the truths of the Bible, and the wisdom of life experience to help those in need. It is not a substitute for clinical care and it is not a Bible study. It is professional counseling delivered by a licensed clinician who does not ask you to leave your faith at the door.

At Christian Counseling Alliance we provide comprehensive Christian based counseling to individuals ages teen through adult, couples, and families. Common areas include:

General

Depression, anxiety and panic, adjustment issues, substance abuse, grief, job stress, spirituality, relationships, codependency, chronic illness, weight management issues, and family of origin issues.

For Women

Abuse and trauma recovery, eating disorders, depression, phase of life issues, and abortion recovery.

For Men

Anger management, sexual addiction, identity issues, and accountability issues.

Relationships

Marriage counseling, premarital counseling, separation, divorce recovery, infertility, and sexual dysfunction.

Family

Family therapy, blended families, adoption, and sibling issues.

Dr. Gail also consults and speaks to groups and businesses about leadership development, relationship dynamics, team building, and stress management with businesses, non profits, and ministries.

Why Medina County individuals and families choose Christian Counseling Alliance

The wait is the problem, and we built around it

The most common thing we hear from people in a shortage county is not that they could not find any counselor. It is that the first available appointment was weeks out, and by then the moment had passed. Ohio’s average wait for a first mental health appointment runs around 21 days. Our Medina office is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and those evening hours exist specifically because of the commuter pattern here. If you are driving back from Cleveland at 6:00, a 4:00 PM appointment is not an appointment you can keep.

We also start every new relationship with a free 20 minute telephone consultation. You should not have to pay to find out whether a counselor is the right fit for you, and you should not have to sit in a waiting room to figure it out.

Faith is the starting point, not an add on

Plenty of counselors will accommodate your faith. Fewer are built upon it. Medina County has a dense network of churches and ministries, and for many families here the question is not whether to get counseling but whether the person across the room understands why their faith matters to the decision in front of them. We work from a biblically oriented foundation, and our statement of faith is published on this site so you know exactly where we stand before you call.

That matters most in the areas where faith and clinical practice actually intersect: adjustment, anxiety, stress, depression, marriage and premarital counseling, grief, divorce recovery, and addiction and accountability.

Who we see across Medina County

Our Medina Road location puts us within a short drive of most of the county:

  • Medina — Our office sits on Medina Road, minutes from the historic Public Square and the surrounding downtown district.
  • Brunswick — The county’s largest city, roughly fifteen minutes north, and a common stop for families commuting toward Cleveland.
  • Wadsworth — About twenty minutes south. The 2025 Medina Hospital assessment identified the Wadsworth 44281 zip code as one of the two areas in the Medina Hospital community with the highest estimated need on the food insecurity index, alongside 44256.
  • Lodi — Roughly twenty five minutes southwest. Lodi has historically carried the highest community need index score in Medina County, and residents there described some of the sharpest gaps in behavioral health availability in the 2025 Lodi Hospital assessment.
  • Seville — About twenty minutes south, a smaller community where local counseling options are limited and most residents drive out of town for care.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Our Medina Road office serves the surrounding communities within roughly a 15 mile radius, including Brunswick, Wadsworth, Lodi, and Seville. Most clients from these communities reach us in twenty to twenty five minutes. We opened in Medina specifically so that county residents would not have to drive to Akron or Cleveland for faith based counseling.

Medina County is one of 75 Ohio counties designated as a mental health shortage area, which means there are fewer providers than the population needs. The 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment for Medina Hospital identified Behavioral Health as one of the county’s top prioritized health needs, citing limited provider availability and long wait times. That shortage is a large part of why we opened a second location here.

Christian counseling uses the same clinical tools as any professional counseling practice, with the truths of the Bible and the wisdom of life experience brought alongside them. You work with a professionally trained counselor who shares your faith framework rather than working around it. Our statement of faith is published on our website so you know our position before your first call.
